Frequently Asked Questions About Studio Newborn Sessions

| Owen Sound & Grey-Bruce Newborn Photographer |

The arrival of a new baby is undoubtedly one of life’s most exciting events, and as a mom myself, I wholeheartedly believe it is a time in your family’s life that should be documented. I am honoured each and every time I have the opportunity to help capture these fleeting details and moments for newly expanded families.

As your Owen Sound newborn photographer, we offer both in-studio and at-home portrait session options, however our in-studio newborn portrait packages tend to be the most popular.
There are a variety of things to consider when booking a studio newborn portrait session for your baby. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions received from our newborn session inquiries -

1. When should I schedule my newborn session?
It is recommended to schedule your newborn session during your third trimester, ideally between weeks 28-36. This ensures that you secure a spot in our calendar, as we prefer to capture the session within the first two weeks after baby’s birth. Your session is secured using your due date, and once baby arrives, parents can reach out and at that point we will confirm a date for the session.

2. How long does a newborn session last?
We offer two in-studio newborn portrait session packages — the “Petite” option that focuses on wrapped images of baby only, and the “Full” session that includes individual shots as well as parent and family shots. An hour is allotted for the “petite” session, whereas 3 hours is allotted for the regular session. The scheduled time allows for capturing a variety of shots and for feeding and soothing, if necessary.

3. What should my baby wear for the session?
There’s no need to plan an outfit for baby to wear for the session (unless you have a special one you’d like him/her to be photographed in). Dressing baby in a loose, easy-to-remove sleeper is ideal; then when you arrive to the studio, I will undress baby down to the diaper, and then swaddle him/her for some wrapped poses to start.

4. Do you provide props and accessories?
Yes, I have a collection of props and accessories that are dedicated for use during newborn sessions. I plan and curate the various set-ups that I will use during your session prior to your arrival to the studio. If you have a specific or sentimental item you would like to incorporate into a photo, you are welcome to bring that along with you to your session.

5. How will you ensure baby’s safety during the session?
The safety of your newborn is my top priority. With over 13 years of experience in photographing newborns, I have worked with hundreds of babies, and use various techniques and poses that ensure your baby is comfortable, safe, and secure throughout the session.

6. Can parents and siblings be included in the session?
Yes, baby’s immediate family members are welcome (and encouraged!) to participate in our Full newborn portrait session offering. Parent and sibling shots are a wonderful way to capture the bond with your new baby. We typically plan for these shots to take place at the beginning of the session to maintain the comfort for your baby.

7. What if my baby doesn’t cooperate during the session?
Every baby is different - some babies may sleep through the entire session, whereas others don’t want to miss a thing and are wide awake. As long as baby is content, we can capture some beautiful imagery of him/her. As an experienced newborn photographer, I am skilled and comfortable with soothing babies. Although I have a loose plan of what I would like to accomplish in every session, I am flexible and prepared to adapt to baby’s needs and schedule.

8. Is there anything I need to bring to the session?
The studio is equipped for pretty much everything we will need for the session! Prior to your session, I will provide you with a newborn session prep guide pdf that will outline what to expect, and how to prepare for your session. It’s always a good idea to bring along extra diapers, and if bottle feeding, bring more bottles than you would normally need for the specified window of time that your session will last for.

9. How long will it take to receive my photos?
Approximately one week after your session, you will be provided with an online, watermarked proofing gallery. From your gallery, you will select your desired images. Once confirmation is received of the images you have selected, the final shots will be edited and delivered within 2 to 4 weeks.

10. What areas do you serve?
My in-home studio is located about 15-minutes outside of Owen Sound, ON near Shallow Lake. We have clients travel to us from all over Grey and Bruce counties, including Owen Sound, Port Elgin, Southampton, Hanover, and the Bruce Peninsula.

Having your newborn session completed in-studio is a convenient option, as we provide everything that will be needed for your little one’s session. Contact me to reserve your in-studio newborn session today!
