Moody Sibling Session

| Owen Sound & Area Child Photographer |

Whenever I’m photographing families with more than one child, I can almost guarantee that in addition to at least one great family shot, the most desired image from parents is a really nice sibling capture. As a mom of three, I can certainly attest to this as well. Whether my family is in front of another photographer’s lens, or whether I’m photographing my kids on my own, it’s the sibling shot that just makes my heart explode. My greatest accomplishments of life in a single frame. As a mother, is there really anything more satisfying than that?!

Last year, I created a series of black & white portraits of my youngest daughter, Makenzie (below). Ever since, I had wanted to do the same with my older two children, so that I could display an image of each child together.

Fast forward a year (because, #photographerlife - client work comes first!), I decided to set aside the time to get it done. But I also had an idea to create a sibling portrait with the same set-up in mind. A sibling image with a twist, my kiddos as my muses, of course! Like most children, my three often give me a run for my money when I’m attempting to photograph all of them at once … so this method actually worked out easier for me! Would you have guessed that I didn’t actually have them grouped together like this at the same time?? The image below is actually a composite!

My kids tend to be much more cooperative when I photograph them one-on-one, so that’s the approach I used to create this image. I spent time photographing each of them on their own, allowing their personalities to shine through. In my mind, I knew I needed at least one decent profile shot of each of them, so we shot this pose at the end. I then selected my favourite profile shot from each of their “mini” sessions, and merged them together in Photoshop to create this resulting sibling image.

I adore the final outcome, and will display it proudly on our wall, along with a favourite individual photograph of each of them. What do you think? Do you like this more moody take on a sibling portrait, or would you prefer one with the subjects facing the camera and smiling?? To be honest, I love both, and even though this one is more on the moody side, it still warms my heart!
